London Candidates Tournament 2013

The anorthodox style of Aronian!

Levon Aronian one of the best players in the world
has a highly imaginative and unique style at the same time!

Looking through all his games in this tournament
and the set ups that he adopted
I can surely say that
he was well off the beaten track

Let's see together his positions
and the common pattern that keeps on emerging

Aronian - Radjabov

Against Radja he had White

he reached this position fearlessly
and he boldly sacrificed his queen for the two rooks

and he got a nice advantage!

Aronian - Kramnik

Against Kramnik he gave up his bishop for two pawns

and he got a very complicated position!

Svidler - Aronian

Against Svidler he was on the receiving edge
and got punished for the g5 move

Aronian - Ivanchuk

Here he has sacrificed two pawns on c4 and a2, he has played g4 and the Bf5 is hanging.
He won on time

Ivanchuk - Aronian

and here he played b4 with the idea to sac a knight on b4 and vast open the position in the centre
where the White king is
Again he won on time

From the previous examples it is becoming obvious
that Aronian is a creative player that uses irregular set ups when he wants to win
and to complicate enormously the postion!

While I admire his fighting spirit
in some positions he fell victim of his own original ideas
and that stopped him from becoming a challenger!

I wish him all the luck in the next cycle
and looking forward to watching his games!
